Integrated Working Groups

Six permanent Working Groups are established, which should be in operation for the whole duration of both Batteries Europe and BATT4EU Partnership.

These six Working Groups correspond to six distinct R&I areas that are key to achieving a competitive, sustainable European battery industrial manufacturing capability and enabling zero-emission mobility and renewable energy storage integration. Together, these groups shall cover all segments of the battery value-chain. These six areas are:

This Working Group will focus on a long-term vision of the expected emerging and new battery technologies reaching as far as 2050, including new chemistries and the themes supported by the BATTERY 2030+ initiative.

Its specific tasks and topics include

  • technology watch: to create an awareness of new concept technology developments worldwide
  • study of the development of an efficient modelling platform, integration of sensor technology, new battery chemistries
  • analysis of how emerging battery technologies can be brought from lab to factory and into the market
  • supporting small and medium-sized companies (SME´s) with new concepts to connect with industry

This Working Group will focus on raw materials (sourcing, extraction and sustainable processing), end-of-life and recycling aspects (collecting, sorting, dismantling, recycling processes).

Its specific tasks and topics include

  • development of circular models including substitution of critical raw materials
  • focus on producing and refining materials
  • eco-design and eco-labelling
  • reversed logistics, battery dismantling and improved chemical processes for metal recovery
  • address sustainability and public acceptance issues
  • second life
  • disassembly

This Working Group will focus on advanced materials for battery cells, modules and packs (with an emphasis on active materials and electrolytes).

Its specific tasks and topics include

  • benchmarking of various battery chemistries as well as on full cell level
  • standardisation for reporting of materials performance
  • address product- and process-related innovation with lower environmental footprint
  • study of materials selection for specific applications
  • workshops concerning materials and manufacturing and materials and recycling

This Working Group will focus on cell design and manufacturing aspects, including on the need to develop, in Europe, battery mass production manufacturing capabilities throughout the value chain.

Its specific tasks and topics include

  • address issues in relation to intellectual property rights
  • carry out studies with respect to sustainability
  • consider new manufacturing techniques and applicability to battery technology
  • setting R&D priorities taking into consideration the needs of large cell manufacturing initiatives
  • strenghten communication between cell manufacturing industry and R&D
  • establish links along the value chain: materials & machine manufacturers, automotive industry, energy industry.

This Working Group will focus on different battery end-uses for transport and mobility applications (road, waterborne, airborne, rail, etc.), including off-road and mobile machinery applications (logistics, mining, etc.), exploiting synergies between the different applications by developing new technologies at the battery system level (considering mechanical, electrical, and thermal engineering aspects, as well as battery management software and hardware).

Its specific tasks and topics include

  • identify the technological needs and challenges for the transport sector like hardware for (fast) charging, digitalisation for application side and assessment of battery performance for transport
  • fast charging infrastructure
  • vehicle to grid (in cooperation with WG6)
  • second life batteries (in cooperation with WG6)
  • recycling for the end users (in cooperation with WG2 and WG6)

This Working Group will focus on different battery systems for stationary applications (ESS, static industrial machinery, 2nd life, etc.), exploiting synergies between the different applications by developing new technologies at the battery system level (considering mechanical, electrical, and thermal engineering aspects, as well as battery management software and hardware).

Its specific tasks and topics include

  • identify the technological needs for efficient stationary battery storage system
  • explore the role of batteries for stationary applications such as providing balancing and ancillary services
  • vehicle to grid (in cooperation with WG5)
  • second life batteries (in cooperation with WG5)
  • recycling for the end users (in cooperation with WG2 and WG5)
  • study of the benefits of digitalization and blockchain technology for stationary applications
  • explore the regulatory barriers that could avoid the deployment of battery stationary storage
  • study the potential development of business models that allow monetisation of services
  • hybridisation of energy storage technologies

The main objectives for Batteries Europe & BATT4EU Working Groups are:

To provide scientific-based reviews (roadmaps) on the different relevant technologies, including gap analysis, benchmarking, KPIs, etc.;

To shape a joint, unique, comprehensive strategic research and innovation agenda (SRIA) for the European battery value chain;

3

To map and benchmark the current state-of-the-art battery technologies, updating the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) values across the battery value chain and establishing target KPI values for future battery R&I;

4

To provide recommendations on research and innovation priorities and draft topics for the Horizon Europe work programmes of the BATT4EU Partnership.

These stock-taking and prioritisation objectives can be schematically split up into three distinct sets of tasks, as illustrated here below:

To publish technology reviews (roadmaps), define KPIs and benchmarks and develop common reporting methodologies. These activities, highly relevant for both initiatives, will be mainly supported by Batteries Europe Secretariat, as a result of their commitments in the awarded CSA under call HEU-CL5-2021-D2-01-07.

To elaborate the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda for the European battery Community. Initial steps on the structure and outline of the SRIA are limited to BEPA’s members and the Batteries Europe Steering Board; detailed drafting is open to both Batteries Europe’s and BEPA’s members.

To identify, prioritise and draft the key battery R&I topics for the Horizon Europe Work Programmes of the BATT4EU Partnership. This activity is restricted to BEPA’s members.
